Heartworm
Exceptional Owner Wanted

                       Heartworm Positive Dog

Some of the dogs that come into the Rescue arrive with heartworms.
Heartworms can be treated effectively with medications. These dogs are
looking for exceptional owners who are willing to provide them with the
care they need. Heartworms are worms that live in the heart and the
vessels surrounding the heart.
Mosquitoes spread them. Heartworms, if left untreated, can cause heart
damage, or lead to problems with the lungs, kidneys and other organs.
These dogs may need some tests to determine if any damage has already
been done. Your veterinarian may decide to do blood work and a
urinalysis, take x-rays, or have an ultrasound done.
There are safe medications, which can be used to remove the heart worms.
Occasionally there are reactions to the medications. Treatment may take
several months to complete. Once treatment is complete, the dog can take
medications, which prevent heartworm infection in the future. It will be the
responsibility of the new owner to provide the dog with any necessary
medical care. Please call your veterinarian to discuss what the treatment
options are before you adopt a heart worm positive dog.
